Meet The Service Unit Coordinators: Laurie Brown
What year did you become involved/take on your current role in your Service Unit? I’m a transplant from Southern California and a Lifetime Girl Scout. I’ve been a registered Girl Scout for 43 years and an active volunteer for 27 years. I’ve been the Montgomery Service Unit manager since Fall 2023.
What area does your Service Unit cover? Montgomery County
When and where does your Service Unit meet? I’m just starting to get to know the Montgomery leaders and will start meeting monthly, soon.
What is your favorite type of GS activity (STEM, Outdoor, Entrepreneurship, Life Skills) I love working with the high school girls (Khaki Crew as they're called in CA). I love watching how these young women grow and blossom into amazing adults who embody the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
What is your Service Unit known for? E.g., an event, involvement in the community, product sales, Highest Awards, etc. Although I'm new to my role in Montgomery, I'm very proud of the accomplishments that the Lake Stars Service Unit in CA achieved. We were very proud to be honored with San Gorgonio Council's President's Award several times.
What do you look forward to the most in your role with the Service Unit? I look forward to helping the Montgomery Service Unit grow in numbers to bring Girl Scouting to more girls. I love running events and plan to run a wide variety of events and activities for Montgomery as well as opening them to girls throughout GSSA.
What achievement are you most proud of when it comes to Girl Scouts? As a girl, I went all the way through Girl Scouts and was able to earn my 1st Class Award (equivalent to the Gold Award). As a mom, I was able to lead my daughter from Daisies through Ambassadors and was able to watch her earn her Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award and eventually open her own Dog Grooming Salon here in Montgomery. Girl Scouts builds girls with Courage, Confidence, and Character, who make the world a better place and I’m very proud to be a part of that.
What is your favorite memory with Girl Scouts, either as a girl member, a Troop Coordinator, or in a Service Unit role? My favorite memory is always watching girls that started as sweet little Daisies proudly walk across the bridge to become Adult Girl Scouts.
