Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson’s Love Your Community is an on-going anti-litter campaign. The campaign sponsored collaboratively by Commission District 2, Keep Mobile Beautiful, and the Alabama Coastal Heritage Trust, is a county-wide (including all cities) effort to encourage and organize grassroots citizen involvement in attacking the growing litter problem in our community.
Supplies such as litter grabbers, reusable and disposable bags, safety T-shirts, and gloves are provided at no charge to members of all participating teams, and teams can consist of as few as one person or up to fifty or more dedicated individuals. Volunteers may be your neighbors, friends, family, co-workers, school service organizations, or any other group or individual who is tired of seeing ugly litter everywhere and realizes that we all have to work together for a cleaner environment.
Each team chooses a designated geographic area around their neighborhood, business, school, place of worship, or major thoroughfare for which to monitor and pick up litter. Litter pick-up dates and times are determined by each team to fit team members’ schedules.
To join our Love Your Community campaign, sign up your team on the attached Pledge form and return the completed Pledge to Mobile County District 2.
You will then be contacted when your team’s supplies are ready for pick-up. At least quarterly, we ask that you email us to give the number of volunteers/volunteer hours, and bags of litter collected to help us keep track of our efforts. Also, we would love to see pictures of your team in action to share with the community! Many thanks in advance for your help and support. Let’s Love Your Community and clean up Mobile County!

In 1974 the South Alabama Horticultural & Botanical Society Inc. agreed to develop and maintain the current 100 acres as Mobile Botanical Gardens, and leases the land from the City of Mobile. Prior to European settlement in the 1700’s, the land on which Mobile Botanical Gardens stands today was part of a vast longleaf pine forest. Because most of this land was logged in the early 1900’s, our 35 acre conservation forest area is considered second generation growth. The lake in Langan Park on the other side of Museum Drive was once Mobile’s water supply until the 1950’s, and the acreage surrounding the lake was restricted from development.

The new Planetarium system – the Super Mediaglobe II installed in February of 2014 – is the world’s first full-color single-lens digital planetarium. It projects simulations of the latest information gathered about our universe and presents it with leading-edge digital dome technology. Its 3-D digital planetarium functions simulate not just the earth and sky, but can take audiences to the edge of the known universe. In addition to the simulations of stars, constellations, and planets, SUPER MEDIAGLOBE II projects natural sky phenomenon including lightning, clouds, rain, snow and aurora that can be superimposed on the background sky or an all-sky image or movie. This remarkable ability creates more natural and realistic scenes to immerse and inspire families and students.
The new technology improves the viewer experience for visitors to the Planetarium and allows for exploration of Earth through the use of continually updated satellite datasets of our planet’s land, ocean, atmosphere and climate of our entire planet.
Incorporating a digital 25,000 watt Dolby 5.1 surround sound system, the W.A. Gayle Planetarium Theater is capable of accommodating a wide range of programs, from lectures to film series to live performances. But first and foremost, the planetarium is a remarkable astronomy education resource, allowing visitors to explore their universe through traditional live star talks and immersive virtual journeys to the far reaches of the cosmos.
