Camp Staff Camp staff members are enthusiastic, talented and caring individuals. Staff are selected on the basis of skills, experience, ability to serve as role models and their genuine desire to work with girls in the outdoors. The majority of our counselors are teachers or college students. The staff know how to involve girls in the camp community, make leadership decisions and how to handle homesickness. All staff members receive extensive on-site training that includes camp facilities, health and safelty, activity programming and positive camper and staff interaction. Programs and activities are supervised by qualified staff and are conducted according to professional standards. The health and safety of each camper is a primary concern of all the camp staff. The camps are inspected by the county boards of health and operate in compliance with their standards, along with those outlined gy Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. Each staff member is trained in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR. A qualified health manager is on duty at all times. The camp health managers work closely with the camps' on-call physicians and arrangements are made in advance with local emergency response personnel for complete emergency care. Amy Farrar is the Outdoor Education Programs Manager at GSSA. Amy has spent most of her adult life working with the public in the great outdoors (especially in the water). As an Americorp Park Ranger, she developed and presented educational programs throughout the Florida State Park System. For the last two years, she has used her expertise to incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) into fun and educational programs and camp sessions for GSSA. Her favorite part of camp is seeing the freedom and personal growth the girls feel once they have overcome the challenges of being away from home. Our Camps Director, Anna Marie Phelps ("Woody"), has led camp for 18 years. Anna Marie is also one of the council's camping trainers and is an outdoor skills specialist. She designed the council's Mariners Pathway and works with the Mariner Troop throughout the year. Anna Marie has worked with both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts as a leader and trainer.
